Into the Mystic

Delaney’s art combines images of landscapes, people, animals, other worldly spirits and symbols. Forests, deserts, tropical landscapes, and animals-- coyotes, horses, dogs and birds may be combined into a single image to convey an underlying concept or sometimes split into the panes on a canvas, or for NFTs made into a video for a story board effect.

In her painting ‘Spirits in the Woods’ figures of black spirits walking zombie like through Autumnal woods, the leaves and trees bright with the golden and rust colors of fall with one white spirit figure lounging on a tree limb . Spirits in the Woods has been made into an animated NFT with overlays and photo manipulation. The painting ‘Walking the TightRope’ shows an androgynous young person walking a tightrope in the dark, their arms outstretched for balance, illuminated by dangling lightbulbs. The darkness in the background splashed is flecked with light paint to indicate stars.

In her teens she experienced lucid dreaming; while in a relaxed half-awake state she’d have having vivid images with spiritual and mystical themes. She also experienced astral travel feeling as if she was leaving her body and either looking down at herself on the bed, or rising up and traveling through the sky. The representation of spirits in many of her pieces represent the presence other worldly beings not visible naked eye, some of whom are stuck after death before moving to another realm.

In her curiosity to understand what the lucid dreaming visions mean, Delaney has looked at religions and spiritual practices and studied occultism and shamanism. She feels driven to bring her lucid dreaming. visualizations to life in her art but mentions the viewer of her art is welcome to project their own meaning on any of the pieces. She says she also creates pieces using an alternate imaginative approach without a having a concept of the finished image.

Delaney names Mexican muralists as influences in her painting artwork in how they place images together in a way to illustrate a concept that is representational but not realism. She is attracted to the works of artists who employ mystical symbolism in the imagery, romantic symbolists and female artists Dorothy Tanning, and Leonara Carrington.

Delaney started making the NFTS in 2021 and it was a natural segue way combining her background an tech with her art background. Initially she used photographs of some of her finished paintings as a base manipulating the photographs in Affinity photo and then animating them putting in moving skies, additional drips, and overlays. She also uses photographs taken on her iphone as a base and draws on top of them in procreate software with an Apple pencil, and then moved AI into generating images from prompts and combining the results into images. The variety of variety of tools that have become available has significantly broadened and opened up her ability to bring her visualizations to fruition.
